1) President’s Corner – Doug and Sandy
We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the Anniversary dance this Saturday! Also mark your calendar for our Summer Beach Party on July 16th. We will have a picnic (open to all family members) followed by some good dancing!
2) Upcoming Club Dance - 60th Anniversary Dance May 21st - Doug and Sandy
Theme – All about Mike
Hosts – Sandy and Doug Finnicum (with help from Charlie and Donna Valizan)
Greeters – none
Celebrating 20 years with Mike as the caller of the Docey Dandies! We have some special activities planned celebrating his time with the club. In addition, we will have a slide show of the year in review – over 135 pictures. It is amazing how active the club has been this year! We know of at least one club visiting (Swinging Singles) so I suspect it will be a very fun, full dance.
Note 1: This dance will also be our food drive. Please bring cans of food - highest needs are spring & summer, non-perishable, non-expired. Consistently needed items- personal hygiene items, canned fruit, applesauce & peanut butter. No green beans or corn please. Anyone bringing in food will receive $1 off admission.
Note 2: There will be a signup sheet at the dance for anyone who wants to order one of the Docey Dandies shirts.
Note 3: Sandy will have a theme suggestion sheet at the dance. Please think of one or two themes for dances next year. Sandy will pull together all the suggestions and propose them to the Advisory board for approval at the annual Planning meeting in June.
Note 4: Please bring light food vs sweets to the dance as Shirley is making a cake!
3) MEMBERSHIP – Daryl and Leslie
The Festival on the Trails. A new opportunity to share with your friends just how much fun square dancing is. This is a popular 2-day (June 10, 11) festival with an attendance of 15,000 people: with a car show, kids activities, concerts Friday and Saturday evening and much more. We are planning a Western Dance Party starting at 5:30 pm Saturday June 11th at the corner of Washington and Elm. From 5:30pm-6:30pm we will offer to the public a chance to dance with us. This will be an introduction to square and line dancing. At 6:30pm we will move inside the Grange building for the party. We will be providing Sloppy Joes (Daryl’s family recipe, yum), chips and a drink, as well as a chance to cool down in the air-conditioning. From 6:30pm-8pm we will again be giving the public a chance to dance. Invite your friends or just bring them with you for any part of this fun evening.
4) PUBLICITY – Tim and Christi
We will be making an image/flyer to promote each dance for the 2016-2017 dance season and will be talking to each host/hostess about a month in advance of their dance regarding any specifics they want to promote such as food etc. We will post the flyer on our website and share it with the host of our Facebook page. The flyers on the website home page are examples.
5) TRAVEL – Sandy and Doug
Every news update Sandy and Doug will provide an update as to where the club will be travelling in the next few weeks. In this column we will only discuss travel dances. The full club calendar is on our website. As Daryl and Leslie will tell you, where to go travelling as a club is not a trivial decision. It involves many considerations as outlined in Doug's original email to the club. In the news update we might highlight several possible dances. But only one will be picked each weekend as the official travel dance where we would like the club to travel. Please try to attend those dances if at all possible.
As mentioned in previous communication we have established a private Facebook page, only open to Docey Dandies club members, where people can share their travel plans and any pictures from their dance travels. This page has been set up, and any members that we know of that are on Facebook have been added to the group. If you are on Facebook and haven’t been added let Daryl or Doug know and we will add you. If you don’t want access you can easily block it or let us know and we will take you off. We know many people are not on Facebook and that this is imperfect, but at this point it is the best method we have for ad hoc sharing of travel plans. So far I think it has worked as hoped.
