Hello Docey Dandies Students,

We hope everyone got a copy of our Welcome to Docey Dandies Square Dance Lessons Fall 2015 handout.  We had 33 students on Tuesday night which is fantastic and to which we say, "thank you"!  We hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as we did!

At the sign-in table we asked for your email address.  We will be using them to send you all the calls taught each lesson night so you can practice or study those calls.  If you have to miss a lesson, this will help you know which calls to study and work on to stay current with the lessons.  As needed, we will offer catch up lessons in the kitchen at the Grange to help students catch up with the class…we will leave no one behind!

Speaking of fun, think of how much more fun lessons would be if your friends or family were taking lessons with you.  Remember the next lesson is also free. We structure the lesson in a way that enables the new students to catch-up quickly with the 1st week’s students. Currently we believe that we will have about 10 new students showing up next week. So, go-ahead and ask your friends and family to join you in the lessons Tuesday September 15th!

Thank you,
Docey Dandies Membership Committee

Thank you Angels! ~ sent to the club

On Tuesday, we had our first lesson of the 2015-2016 dance season. 33 students showed up! It was amazing! We had seven squares dancing all night long. To go with the 33 students we had 32 Angels. This enabled us to create the perfect squares for learning. And the Angels were perfect!

Thank you everyone who was an Angel – you were awesome!

I encourage anyone who wants to practice up on their dancing skills to come out and Angel at lessons. Remember one of the main goals of the lessons is to “allow newer dancers an opportunity to become better dancers”. These lessons are the perfect environment to shake off the rust and just have fun!

Next Tuesday the Membership Committee is going to host an after-lesson debriefing on how the lesson went at Perkins in Gardner. Everyone is welcome. The Membership Chair is buying the first round of drinks!

Looking For Volunteers to Dance On the Old Settler's Parade Float in Olathe on Sat. 9/12/15

We have borrowed the Heart of America's float and will be dancing in this years Old Settlers parade. This parade is watched by 65,000 people so it is a great chance to get our name out in front of the public. This year we will just be using the red and white color theme (we will not be decorating the float).
The weather looks to be in the low 80's for Saturday the 12th. Our float will be #122 and we will assemble at Elm St. on the WEST side of Kansas Ave.
Daryl has agreed to pickup the float and drive it in the parade. George has volunteered to store the float at his place Friday night and Charlie is volunteering to do the music like he did at the Gardner parade. Thanks!
Please let me know if you can help out by dancing on the float. I am hoping to have one square of dancers and about 3 to 4 relief people.  We had a great time at the Gardner parade and this one has 65,000 people watching!

Square dance lessons begin in 4 days! ~ from Doug Finnicum

Lessons will be starting Tuesday Sept. 8th 7:00 pm at the Grange. There is still time to talk to your friends and invite them to come. Remember the first two lessons are free so they can try it before having to make a commitment. Details can be found on our website DoceyDandies.org or on our Facebook page at Facebook.com/DoceyDandies. It is beginning to look like the class is going to be one of the bigger ones which should make for a lot of fun!

The Membership Committee has been hard at work with lots of help from the rest of the club putting together a very dynamic, flexible lesson plan. It is our intention to offer square dance lessons any day of the week any time of the year. We are prepared to start an Alternative Beginner Lessons (ABLs for short) anytime we have interest. Only requirement is that we need at least 4 students to start one.

The club’s goals for the lessons are three-fold:

  • teach new people to square dance

  • allow “newer” dancers an opportunity to become better dancers

  • to create a positive social, club atmosphere.

We encourage Docey Dandies who want to practice their dance skills to come to lessons. If you have previously graduated it is free. Personally I found it took me two sets of lessons before I really felt like I got all the calls down.

This year the fall lessons are going to move at a bit faster pace. We are hoping they will be done sometime in early December. I asked Mike what he needed from the club to accomplish this and he replied “Quality Angels”. (See Doug's email regarding guidelines for Angels).

This year Sandy and I will act as Lesson Coordinators. Working with the members of the Membership Committee we will try to structure the lessons to accomplish our three goals (teach new dancers, refresh newer dancers and to have fun). We will be looking for Buddy Angels (Angels to dance in a square that have a connection with the students in a square). When students come to lessons we will check with them to see how they found out about us. If you recruited some of the students let us know so we will know to square you up with them.

(The above is an excerpt from Doug's 8/30/15 email to the club.)
