Our First Dance! Saturday, Sept 9th.
Hello everyone,
With summer almost gone (we hope it was a good one for all of you), it’s time to gear up for the start of lessons and our first club dance.
We also want to offer a big thank you to Lynda for coordinating the fair dance last week! Thank you to Mike for the great calling and all the members that helped with this big event. We gained a few new prospects for lessons.
Demos/parades coming up, Save the dates:
Desoto Days: Saturday, September 2, 2017 starting at 9am until about 10:30am. The event organizers have asked us to do a square dance demo with the public joining in before the parade starts. Mike will be calling this and is being paid by the Desoto Days organization. Mike would like our club to support this as it is another chance to get new students for lessons. This will be similar to the fair demo dance where we ask interested people in the crowd to come dance with us. More exact location information will be coming soon.
Johnson County Old Settlers Day Parade: Saturday, September 9, 2017. Please let Lynda know if you are interested in dancing on this float. We will need to be at the staging area by 9:00am, I will send updated staging location when I receive it. (parade starts at 10am) Below is the parade information form the parade web site:
Parade date- September 9, 2017. The Johnson County Old Settlers Parade is the largest parade in the state of Kansas. It has an average of 160 entries, including 16 area High School and Middle School bands, numerous club and organization entries and several commercial floats. The parade is attended by between 65,000 and 75,000 people.
The Parade is the kickoff to Saturday's events. After the parade you can enjoy food, fun and entertainment that is located right off the parade route.
The Parade route will be as follows; It begins at the corner of KANSAS and LOULA Streets, goes EAST to CHESTNUT then NORTH to PARK then EAST and ends at BUCHANAN Street.
Prior to the parade, beginning between 7:00am and 7:30am the side roads will be shut down to clear the area for the parade and for assembling of the entries. It is suggested that you come early, grab a great parking spot in the parking garage, located on the corner of Loula and Cherry streets, and then you can enjoy the rest of the day. *Access to the garage will be shut down by 8:00am for the Parade and then reopened immediately after the parade.
BBQ, Bingo and Boot Scootin, Friday, Sept. 15, 2017. 5pm dinner and bingo followed by our dancing demo. This event is offered by Gardner Parks & Recreation and will be held at the Open Class building at the JOCO Fairgrounds (white building in front to the Grange building). They would like us to just do demo dancing for this event, not public dancing. If you want to eat and play BINGO, the cost is $15.00 and you need to RSVP to the Gardner Parks & Rec by September 8th. I will update with the dance time slot for those that want to help after the dinner and BINGO, (this will be free for those who do not want to eat).
Baldwin Maple Leaf Festival Parade: Saturday, October 21, 2017 More information to come as the date gets closer.
Lessons: Our fall lessons start Tuesday September 12, 2017. 7:00pm at the Grange. Mike will be teaching this set of lessons and with your help we will have a nice turn out of new students. We plan to have the lessons completed by the first half of January. We will again offer lessons starting in October if there is enough interest.
We are placing signs at the Gardner Farmers Market and already have a family of 4 that has signed up for lessons and another person that signed up thru our web page! Ask your friends, neighbors and coworkers about joining you at lessons…you never know who may say yes!
Yard Signs are available if you would like to place them in your yard or at a business that gives you approval. Please keep them off the terraces. Let Leslie or I know if you would like yard signs and we will get them to you.
Our First Dance! Saturday, Sept 9th. 7pm-7:30 will be blow off the rust plus, followed by the dance 7:30pm-10pm. The theme is Yankee Doodle Dandies, so wear your patriotic colors. Take a minute at the dance to look at the decorated sign-up board that Shirley posted for us and volunteer to be a host and/or greeter. Haven’t hosted a dance yet? Just sign up as a co-host to learn the ropes!
Thank you and looking forward to seeing everyone,
Daryl & Leslie Arndt
