a) The elections are coming!
Viola and Bill are working diligently to get our election slate filled before the dance on the 25th. The only elected position still available for the slate is the Alternate HOA delegate position. This position will probably require about 4 hours of your time over the course of the year.
ALTERNATE DELEGATE POSITION:
b) HOA Newbie dance highlights
(Daryl sent this to the HOA for a spotlight note. I have abbreviated it for this news update and bolded the Docey Dandies contributions – our club was a wonderful host!)
On Sunday, February 19, 2017, the HOA sponsored their first Newbie. The dance was hosted by the Docey Dandies. The goal of this dance was to get the recent graduates out dancing and hear different callers at their comfort level. This was also a chance for all area club’s new dancers to meet each other along with experienced dancers and have fun.
We had 7 callers donate their time to call for this dance. Chuck Owings was the MC for the dance from the Docey Dandies, Bill Roles, Bill Reynolds - Harmony Squares, Dan Robinson - Do-Si-Doers, Mike Salerno - Docey Dandies, and Stan & Beth Neidecker – Docey Dandies.
All new graduates from any area club were admitted free and received a NEWBIE dancer button. There was a free used clothing give away for all graduates, with a free will donation for experienced dancers. The “newbies” got a surprise when Stan Neidecker, in a bee keeping suit handed out bee “antennas” for them to wear during the dance. All HOA club graduates in attendance, received a coupon book good for one free admittance to each HOA club dance. It is hoped that the graduates will travel with their club and visit other HOA clubs with their free passes.
Attendance totals were: Newbies - 23, Experienced – 71. After expenses, we were able to donate $250.00 to the 67th National Square Dance Convention, Social and Special Events Committee.
We would like to thank all the callers that participated and called on their time, Marvin and Diane Knoche for coordinating the Ask Me To Dance effort, the experienced dancers who supported our newbies, all the HOA clubs that donated to the coupon books, everyone who donated used clothing, everyone that brought refreshments and set up and those who helped clean up after the dance. This was truly a group effort and a great dance!

2) Social Events Coming Up
a) The Shack – movie event
Tim and Pam Mayes are going to see the movie "The Shack" on Saturday, March 4 at 7:30 at the AMC Studio 28 on Strangline in Olathe. They have invited others to attend with them as well as eat as a group at 6:00 pm at Joes KC barbeque. From Pam – “We listened to the audiobook of it several years ago and hoped it would someday be made into a movie”. You can reserve your tickets in advance by going to the AMC website. Our group (plus other family & friends) has tickets in row J seats 7-10 and row L seats 4-10. Let them know if you want to go! (so far I know of at least 8 Docey Dandies are going).
3) Upcoming Club Dance – Dancing in CANDYLAND – Steve and Jen Hosting
4) MEMBERSHIP – Daryl and Leslie
Beth & Stan are currently teaching a wonderful new group of students in lessons. We have 3 couples and two single ladies! They are progressing well (they have already learned about 55+ calls) and will be great additions to the club! Our first potluck and lesson dance with this group will be; Tuesday, March 7 at 6:30pm. Come out and introduce yourselves to our students and get to know them. It is our plan, to have Mike call the lesson dance that night. This will give him the chance to see how they are progressing and the students a chance to get to know him. Bring your favorite dish to pass and enjoy a great night of dancing with our newest members.
Since several members have asked to be informed of the calls taught during lessons, Christi has now posted them on our DoceyDandies.org web page. Just scroll to the bottom of the “Lessons” page to view them.
5) PUBLICITY – Tim and Christi
The Docey Dandies continue to place ads in Fed Fed Facts and Travel On. The Fed Facts is the bi-monthly publication of the Heart of America Federation and the Travel-On is published three times per year by the Kansas Square Dance Association. These publications are helpful resources for dancers to know what is happening with clubs and events in our region.
Our website is another vehicle we are using to inform dancers and potential members. The "Classes" tab has information on Square Dance Lessons. On the Lessons page, viewers can register for lessons or ask questions. The current lesson schedule is posted as are a list of the calls that have been taught to date. Under the "Square Dancing Helps" page, there are links to the SaddleBrooke Squares (video) and the Taminations pages that illustrate each call from various positions. The CallerLab Definitions are posted as well as the CallerLab list of calls by number.

Which club to travel to involves many considerations such as the following:
- Does a club have our banner? Currently no clubs have our banners.
- Have we received a special request to come to a particular dance (i.e. is it an important dance to the hosting club?)
- Have we visited the club recently?
- Does the hosting club regularly support the Docey Dandies dances?
- Some clubs dance on the same night as we do. If the club has a dance on a night that we are not dancing (i.e. summer), we will give it higher priority.
- Have members of our club expressed strong interest in the dances of the other club? Frontier Twirlers probably fits into this category.
