July 14 Summer Dance
Our ‘LEARN TO SQUARE DANCE” yard signs are here! We will start distributing them at the summer dance July 15th. These are 24” X 18” with wire stands. Please be thinking of locations to place around your neighborhood. Ask your friends and area businesses with yards along busy streets or near busy intersections. Get permission before placing signs as we do not want to lose too many this year. Signs need to stay in yards behind the city sidewalks, keep off the terraces. With everyone’s help, we could have a big lesson class this fall!
Travel Dances: Saturday, June 10, 2017, Happy Time Squares, Caller: Vic Perry, Rounds: Vernon Nelson, Lines: Judy Broers, Mainstream/Plus/Rounds Phase II/Lines, Plus 7:15 - 8:00 PM, Mainstream 8:00 - 10:00 PM, First Methodist Church West Campus, 867 Highway 40 (West 6th Street), Lawrence, Kansas, Crazy Hat Dance. Demo Dances: We have a demo dance on Saturday June 3rd with the Docey Dandies starting at 6:30 or 7pm in Edgerton, KS. Stan & Beth are calling this event. Baldwin City Lumberyard Arts Event Demo
Downtown Baldwin City, KS Friday June 16, 2017 at 6:00pm - caller is Kerry Wallace, Dress is casual or square dance attire. We will dance in the open lot between the post office & the Lumberyard Arts Center, I believe 7 is our scheduled time. There will be a portable dance floor so it should be a good surface for dancing. We were invited to participate from the Ottawa Promenaders… We appreciate your help!
Demo/Parade Committee: This year we have elected to have a Demo/Parade Committee instead of one couple doing it all. Daryl & Leslie will coordinate the demos & parades and will make sure all insurance or event paper work is taken care of. We would like members to be on the committee to help find members to dance at our events and decorate our float. Our club will purchase sound equipment to have from now on for these types of events. We also purchase a required ASCAP/BMI music license under Leslie’s name since she is usually able to attend demos and parades.
Fall Lessons: Our fall lessons will start the second Tuesday after Labor Day this year…September12, 2017. It was decided the first Tuesday did not work as most people are recovering from the 3-day holiday and the end of summer travel. Steve & Jen Wildman will be our lesson coordinators this year’s lessons.
Plus lessons: We need to see how many of our members want to take plus lessons this fall. We need to figure cost per student fees and if there is enough interest this year. If you are interested, let Daryl or Leslie know soon so we can decide if plus lessons will happen.
Live Band Dance: Our Live Band Dance is scheduled for October 28, 2017 at the 4-H building. Cost is $10.00 at the door, no pre sales this time.
Leadership Mentoring Program
The Docey Dandies Executive Board voted on April 23, 2017 to start a Leadership Mentoring Program. This program will provide a way for any member interested in an Executive or Advisory Board position to learn the responsibilities of the position first hand. Interested members will shadow the officer/chair to see what their responsibilities are This allows any member the chance to see and understand what the officer/chair position does before they commit to run for a position. It is hoped that the leadership mentoring program will help keep our club running in the future with new, upcoming leadership which is needed to keep our club viable.
1. Present officers/chairs could ask members that express interest or show leadership skills, to be shadowed.
2. Members interested could ask the officer/chair of the position they are interested in about shadowing them.
3. The shadow person could be shown any paper work and responsibilities that pertain to the position they are shadowing.
4. The shadow person could attend executive or advisory board meetings while shadowing but will not have voting rights.
5. You may shadow more than one position, but only one at a time.
6. The shadow person will not be required to run for the position they shadow if they do not feel comfortable for any reason.
If anyone is interested in this program, please let any officer of chairperson know anytime.
New Club Banner: We would like to thank our banner committee, Renee, Mary & Lynda for for the new club banner. They are now in the process of making 6 new travel banners.
Thank you,
Daryl & Leslie
